The Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme supports mothers to exercise their right to feed their child when they need to be fed. We also provide the tools and support to business and venues to make this happen. The Scheme was developed by the Breastfeeding Manifesto Coalition.
63% of breastfeeding mothers report that they have been on the receiving end of unsupportive comments or behaviour while breastfeeding in a public place. Whilst most places have an open attitude, not all women know this, so it is important to encourage all businesses to become breastfeeding welcome and welcome these mums into their venues.
The Scheme is currently available in the following NHS areas:
Camden, Bromley, Central London (Kensington & Chelsea), Islington (follow them on facebook) Tower Hamlets.
Why do we do this?
Breastmilk is the perfect food for babies, the qualities in Breastmilk which protect babies cannot be found in any other milk product. Experts, including the World Health Organisation, strongly recommend that babies be fed exclusively on breast milk for at least their first six months of life. Breastfeeding has been shown to reduce the rates of diarrhoea and vomiting, respiratory and urinary tract infections, asthma and eczema in babies. It is the most important thing a mother can do to improve the lifelong health of her child. The aim of the Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme is to give all mothers this chance.
